 Our Schedule

May 4th – Roma – we stayed at the Westin Roma – very nice hotel with “western” comforts. We took a walking to Trevi Fountain and then to the Spanish Steps. Tip: Don’t miss Trevi Fountain.

May 5th. This was a special day as we visited the Vatican and St. Peters Basilica. If all you can you can do in Rome, do this. Was absolutely beautiful and interesting.

May 6th – Boat docked in Naples, as we took a bus to Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii. Highlight here is Sorrento, as we loved the quaintness of the city. Not too big with lots of restaurants and shopping. We then took a tour through the ancient Roman city of Pomeii. The settlement was mostly destroyed and buried under 20 feet of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. We then boarded a boat and went to the lovely and rich island of Capri. Beautiful views from this high atop village.

May 7th – Vallletta Malta – This is an interesting stop as you’ll learn about the Order of St John. The town was founded in 1565 for refuging solders.

May 9th – Mykonos – did not explore this town too much, just had lunch.

May 10th – Ephesus Turkey – took of the ruins, and then had lunch at a Turkish restaurant. Food was awful, see the photo of the fish they served us. We then went to a quaint silk knitting mill and learned how Turkish carpets are made. Funny, after the learning and cheap potent wine, 20 Turkish salesmen descended upon us to sell us carpets! After the carpets sales, they walked us towards to the exit only to “run” us through several other stores such as jewelry and gifts. Funny stuff, we did not see that coming, neither did the tour guides…they were upset.

May11th Athens – this was a very interesting day. We visited the Acropolis and Parthenon. These sites are absolutely stunning and interesting. Built around 500 BC they are sitting atop a small hill. We had a trek getting up the hill, but when there the reward is wonderful.

 - May 12th. Santorini – we exited the ship on a small boat ferry which took us ashore. There we paid 5euro and went on a cable car to the top of the island to shop and eat. Friends, Frank and Rose Donatelli took mules up to the top. At the top we walked and to the quaint village and shopped. Most of the retail is gift shops selling oil, soap and jewelry. We ate at a nice Greek restaurant for lunch, and then headed down the cable car to the boat.

May 13th – Today we awoke in Crete Greece – we were not sure to go ashore, but we did and were pleasantly surprised. Crete is a large island with ample shopping and restaurants. We took city bus to the fishing village and walked to the water. The main area is crescent in shape and hugs the water with shops and restaurants.

May 14th May 15th – today we set sail to Venice Italy and arrived on the 15th. We took a ferry to the main Saint Marks Square where we took a walking tour of Venice. After the tour we rented a gondola 80 euros with friends Bill and Lisa Silcox. Later in the afternoon we hunted for a good restaurant and were disappointed with our meal. Tip – make sure to peek into the kitchen and see if you can “spot” Mario or Luigi and not Kumar & Karetc. No offence to the Indians, but I can always tell the difference in cooking.
